I worked with Beautiful Machine, and their client Superfly, to develop FlowScholar - a collaboration between Microsoft and The Hip Hop Museum. FlowScholar is a system for generating hip hop lyrics to be used as a starting point for your own lyrics and in the process, expand your knowledge about the deep history of hip hop. More info here.

I was tasked with designing, tuning, and building out the the AI system that generated the lyrics as well as generating historical context for how the lyrics were created using Microsoft OpenAI and a node.js/TypeScript backend.

The system is in use now for various events by Microsoft and the Hip Hop Musuem to engage young artists in hip hop history and creation. The most recent involved a workshop led by Ice-T as seen in the video.

INSTALLATION

Recently awarded the silver prize for “Best Retail Pop-up or Experience, 2023” by the Experience & Design Technology Awards

I was tasked with building all the AI components and overseeing the technology infrastructure for this pop-up installation on Abbot Kinney in Venice, California in collaboration with Beautiful Machine and their client Superfly.

Users were able to answer questions at a kiosk on the corner that would then feed data into an AI system that I built to generate unique AI generated travel destinations based on their inputs. The users could then pickup a custom printed postcard of their destination to take home with a unique destination name based on their inputs.

This was part of a marketing campaign for AWAY luggage. The pop-up was also accompanied by a social media campaign in which users could tag their destinations on Instagram.

Recently awarded a Black Pencil from the D&AD Award 2023

When a child is born with congenital heart disease the rhythm of life is disrupted. Despite being the most common birth defect in the world, general awareness of CHD is low. This drum machine was created in a collaboration between audiovisual designer Love Hultén and teenage engineering to highlight the issue. The device, functioning as a modular synthesizer, produces rhythms made using the electrocardiograms of four children with different heart defects.

While at Plan8 my colleague Andreas and I produced the software version of this incredible drum machine so it could be experienced by anyone and to help raise awareness through a prolonged engagement with the campaign site.

I’m was lucky enough to work on both hardware and software projects related to audio and interactive media. In addition, I was also in charge of internal tooling and lead development on our own bespoke interactive audio engine used in 3D worlds, interactive music apps, and for all of our web projects. I was the main web developer at teenage engineering for some years where I worked across the full-stack, managing multiple code-bases, and working on apps (web and mobile) that pair with the hardware products (utilizing WebAssembly, WebMIDI, WebBluetooth, and a variety of other lower level technologies). Beyond day to day eCommerce responsibilities, we also developed interactive experiences for campaigns, education, and internal design needs. During this time I was awarded the yearly “Nuts and Bolt” award in recognition of my work.

Additionally, after leaving the company, I continued to develop a drum utility in collaboration with David Ericksson at Teenage Engineering to accompany the OP-1, OP-1 Field, and OP-Z which can be found here.
